SEEDS

"Chalk and Duster" is one of the movies dear to my heart, it is among my premium movie collections. Every time I settle to watch it, most of the lessons therein always appear fresh to me. (You should add it to your to-watch list if you haven't seen it yet.

I can not demean any of the lessons I gleaned from the film to the background, but for the sake of this piece, I will bring that of SEEDS to the spotlight. This is because its reality resonates with the timeless lessons my aged Dad use to tell me while growing, and now more than ever, I see the validity of the same in my everyday life. I strongly believe these few words will give you a push and bless your heart as well.

So back to the film "Chalk and Duster", let us anchor our discussion from there. (I am not narrating the film here, the aim is to give us a backdrop for this piece).

Joyti stood by her colleague Vidya, a great and selfless teacher who was dismissed unfairly by a sadistic manipulative principal on the claims that her methods of teaching were outdated. As a result, Vidya suffered a heart attack and was taken to the hospital with a huge bill to settle after heart surgery. All hope seems lost until Joyti took up the gauntlet to challenge the status quo by telling how hard teachers work but earning meagre remunerations and taking up a challenge by the school to prove that they are not outdated.

Together with a certain reporter, Joyti reached out to all the students who were taught by Vidya and are now great men and women in society. Unknown to Vidya, the medical director of the hospital was once her student. All her bills were waived and she was placed on VIP treatment. She reaped from the seeds she had sown in the past.

Our deeds good or bad are seeds, seeds sown in the soil of people's heart, in due time, their harvest will come. And as the Holy Writ said, "...for whatever a man sows, that and that only is what he will reap".

I desire to make the lessons of this piece simple so we can go ahead living it afterwards. For it will profit not me nor you to read these words and keep it away without living its little details in our everyday lives.

Like the great teacher Vidya who reaped from the seeds of good works she had sown in the past at the time she least expected it, permit me to ask you these you; what seeds have you sown? What kind of seeds are your deeds daily sowing for the time of harvest? Some of us are the products of good work sown in the past by our parents and significant others. Start today, plant a seed of good works, the subsequent outcome will outlive you.

One thing you need to note about good works is that they may appear inconvenient but they do not cost a thing. It may stress you a bit but the harvest is worth the stress. Again, tattoo this on your brain, do not go about doing good works to reap the harvest immediately, it is great if you can partake of the harvest, but know that most often it is the people who come after you that will enjoy the harvest of your good works.

Regardless of how hard life is treating you, go about doing good works, plant the seeds in the morning, noon and night, and never withhold your hands from scattering the seeds of good works, the world needs more of this.

Riches will end, power will wane, and knowledge will hit rock bottom but good works live forever. For what lives after you is your work, it is what you leave in others when you are long gone.

The rest of this piece is the practical aspect; I say again, doing good does not cost a thing, I dare you to go about spreading the seed of goodness today, for our very existence is anchored on the goodness of God.

FIRST THING FIRST

Our Default Setting  So I have a friend who has this significant order he looks up to a lot. He has made it in life as an international professor based in the United State and has all the right connections (if you get what I mean). My friend had this deeply ingrained mindset back then in school that once he is done with undergraduate studies, getting employed will not be an issue for him. Five years down the line, he is still pulling and pushing through life to make both ends meet. What happened to the hope he had of being helped by his significant order? Quashed. I know you can relate to this story, you might have heard similar experiences with people you look up to fail you, disappoint you, and let you down. Nigerians believe that the easiest way to get disappointed and useless in life is to look up to your uncle. (How true is this? you judge for yourself). Such is life as we see it. At the end of the day, your help and lifting may or may not come through such people that ...

THE GREATEST DISTRACTOR

I have been struggling to choose the best approach to write this piece; whether to start with statistics of what researchers have done, quotes from great minds or even illustrations. However, I realized that the best way is to hit the nail on the head, straight, simple and blunt. (And I don't claim that this piece capture all there is to this issue).  This piece is a follow-up to the one I wrote last week on distraction. After long deep thought, I felt the message will not be complete without adding this perspective to it. I assure you this simple and blunt piece will stare you in the face and show you one of the ways you have been letting part of your life slip past your fingers. We all are guilty when it comes to this. In the last piece, I established that not all distractions appear harmful as some wear innocent looks but are highly detrimental. I also said that it takes diligence and meticulousness to understand and overcome them.  Hence, to overcome this great dist...

DON'T JUST LOSE IT

So I failed to send out the publicity for what I am to write on and share with you yesterday; partly because I have been dragging with my health lately and the fact that writer's block came visiting. Just like trust, consistency is one thing that once established, you don't just lose it. Building consistency is like earning trust, it takes time but can or may be lost in a blink of an eye. So I thought about this yesterday, knowing that someone out there may be waiting on me to send something out today, and here I am, about to make the waiting go down the drain. Well, I had to write something. In life, we exert our efforts, direct our attention and channel our determination to achieve or get some things through persistence, only to let them slip past our fingers because we lack the keeping power of consistency. What I mean is, persistence gets it, consistency keeps it; so by all means, in your persistence, be consistent.  In describing what consistency is not, Hundred Life Desig...
