WHILE YOU CAN

NOTE:         This is going to be one of my shortest writings lately, I hope I pass the message with these few words.

I

t was a praise and worship Sunday, the first Sunday in the month of October, I was not sure if I was ready for the day as I dragged tired unwilling self to church. Well, going to church that day eventually paid.

Amidst the rapturous rhythm and melody of the music that overwhelmed the atmosphere, the massive energetic display of youthful dance and the sacred devotion offered to God through all these, my heart was drawn to something. I took notice of an aged woman whom I have known for like nine years now in the church. Yes, it is a student church and you can as well just imagine the kind of strength present in such environment especially on a praise and worship Sunday. However, the strength, determination and concentration the old woman gave into her dance was enchanting and one of a kind.

Q

uickly, my heart was drawn to the reality of time and space. I was supposed to tag alone also in the praise and worship moment but I was deeply lost in the reality of what had happened to this woman and will soon happen to me and you as well as long as we are alive.  Despite the fact that age has caught up with her and time and space had failed her, her dance was the most captivated.

Lately I have been thinking of how fast time flies especially in the year 2020. I looked at myself, how that that boy of yesterday is becoming a man by day. Thought about my father, how that strength is failing him at 84 even with the desire to do many things, and the truth that everything and everyone is accountable to time and space.

Whatever stage you are now in life, there is something you can do to add value to lives and your society. Such thing don’t have to be big, it must not require much knowledge or money, but it has to come from you. One thing we all are good at most times is procrastination, we bury opportunities and greatness in the grave of “I can always do it later” mentality, but before we realize it, time is failing or has failed us. The secret of life lies in doing what you can while you can no matter how small, crude or insignificant, it could be the saving grace someone needs.

Y

es, your life’s dream and aspiration may not have arrived by now, never forget that you are still in the process of becoming. I shared with a friend two days ago that whatever has not come to be now, its time is not due yet, it is still in the process of becoming, and when the time is ripe, nothing can stop it. Life entirely is a process with one end the beginning of another, so while enjoying and enduring the process of becoming, reach out and do some good, show some love and be kind to all while you can. You may be here today and tomorrow you are no more, so make hay while the sun shine.

You are young now yeah? Make your youthfulness count while you can. You are gifted okay? Bless people while you can. No man is a nonentity, every man has something that someone out there needs. All we have is today as tomorrow is never promised, while we hopefully look for a better tomorrow, we should practically make today count while we can.

Let it be said of us that we did all we can while we can in our lifetime to leave this world a little bit better.

IF YOU WERE PHILIP

Permit me to tell you a bit about Philip. I met Philip in our undergraduate days at the University of Jos. He was never late even though he usually comes from home. I tried several times to beat him in punctuality but I failed on several attempts. Philip was cheerful, full of life, and always the spark of the house.  Last week was a tough yet defining week for me, I lost Philip who has been a friend for 10 years. Did I see it coming? Certainly not. Was I anticipating it sooner? I doubt it. But will we all die? Of course yes.  This is not a tribute but be patient with me as I share with you the lessons I have learned at the cause of his demise this week. I have no doubt they will bless your heart. Philip lived well : I know people are often guilty of saying things about people who are gone that are not usually true, but with a deep sense of honesty, humility, and certitude, at 27, Philip lived well. This is no fallacy, this young man touched lives everywhere he went, if ...

JUST A DAY OFF

Disclaimer The message of this piece may or may not be for everybody, however I pray that somehow you relate with these few words and make sense out of it. O ne of the things I have been consistent with this year is “morning runs”; I exercise three times a week, alternating between the week days. The entire experience became more fun when one of my friends became my neighbour few months ago, and we began running together. Well, what we do every day we go running is adding upon the distance we covered previously and no matter how small the addition is, it gives us a sense of improvement. However, lately, we have been overwhelmed with life and personal struggles that we often skip our morning exercise, and prior to now that I am writing this piece, it has been almost two weeks that we have not gone running. W hat we discovered and even talked about while running this morning (5:27am, Saturday October 24 th , 2020)   was that in as much as our body systems have adopted ...

DO YOUR THING - IN YOUR SKIN

This piece is from my archives but for the sake of this series, I had to dust it up. It is a bit long, but it is for you - yes you. So take a few minutes and go through this with an open mind, who knows, it just might change your life. One year ago I was having a conversation with this lady with whom we have been discussing life, she said to me: “Sir, I have something that is eating me deep inside and I will need help with it; people have been making fun of me because of my body structure, I have been working hard to add some flesh but it is not working, I hate being called a smally”.  I strongly believe that to make life count you honestly have to love yourself, love who you are now and are becoming, and constantly remind yourself that you are a masterpiece, God's work of art, one of a kind, custom-made limited edition person. What I am saying in essence is, to make life count, you have to be comfortable in your skin. In Your Own Skin To be comfortable in your skin is to be you an...
